The ReasonThe following organizations believe Rochester has a vibrant creative scene. We pulled together to demonstrate our commitment to creativity and cross-disciplinary exchange. Please come out and show your support for your community with other beautiful losers.

THE LITTLE THEATRELittleIn 1929, The Little Theatre opened its doors with a mission of providing moviegoers with an intimate alternative to the Hollywood-dominated programming that was standard fare at the large downtown movie houses. Over the years, The Little has stayed true to its mission by providing Rochester with an independent spirit. We have expanded from the historical landmark Art Deco theater on East Avenue to include four more screens, a café, art exhibits, live music, film festivals, talkbacks, and educational programs.

AIGA UPSTATE NEW YORKAIGAAIGA’s mission is to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force.

AIGA, the professional association for design, is the place design professionals turn to first to exchange ideas and information, participate in critical analysis and research and advance education and ethical practice. AIGA sets the national agenda for the role of design in its economic, social, political, cultural and creative contexts. AIGA is the oldest and largest membership association for professionals engaged in the discipline, practice and culture of designing. Founded as the American Institute of Graphic Arts in 1914 as a small, exclusive club, AIGA now represents more than 22,000 designers through national activities and local programs developed by more than 60 chapters and 200 student groups.

ART AWAKEArt AwakeArtAwake is a one-day event occurring on March 27th, 2009 in which we bring the art, music, and culture of Rochester together for one night in an unused space. Our call for art is currently in progress. We are especially interested in non-traditional projects, such as site-specific installations, performance pieces, and interactive art. We will also be bringing in about eight local individuals/groups of a diverse range of genres, from hip hop to classical to indie to techno to perform over the course of the 10 hour event.

Widespread collaboration is a major component of making ArtAwake a success. We are working with about 15 groups on the U of R campus, several organizations within the city of Rochester, and each of the seven other area schools besides U of R. Because the scope of ArtAwake is so large, most anyone should be able to find a way to get involved!

Last year was the first year of ArtAwake, which was held on March 28th 2008. Our gallery showed about 250 pieces by 75 local artists and we staged 13 different bands, including the famous blues guitarist Joe Beard. We drew about 800 students and 600 community members to the event, which came off as a stand out success.

ROCHESTER ARTECHArtechThe Rochester Artech 2009 Digital Art Exhibition promotes the expression of the arts through digital media and features pieces by high school and college students, and amateur and professional artists from across the Greater Rochester area. Participants submit pieces throughout January and February, these pieces are juried by a panel of art faculty and professional artists, and the winning pieces are then displayed at the exhibition at ArtAwake beginning March 27. All entered pieces must include some digital element; categories include graphic design, photography, digital illustration, collages, printmaking, animation, digital video, and 3D-installations.
